EDR Institute
Founded by Peter Silverman in 2019, the EDR Institute is a 501(c)(3) corporation that promotes the use of the EDR Protocols as a way to settle disputes early, economically, and on a principled basis. The Institute publishes the EDR Protocols, which provide a four-step process to resolve disputes in 30 to 60 days.
Mission
The EDR Institute is a non-profit whose mission is to work with counsel, neutrals, courts, bar associations, dispute resolution administrators, businesses, and the public to:
Promote the use of the Institute’s early dispute resolution process (“EDR Process”) to resolve civil disputes early, economically and on a principled basis
Train neutrals, counsel and parties on how to use the EDR Process
Educate neutrals, counsel, parties, judges, judicial administrators and the public on the advantages of the EDR Process
Facilitate the use of the EDR Process by maintaining and updating the EDR Protocols to reflect best practices.

Training
The Institute offers in-person training for neutrals and advocates on the core concepts, ethics, and the four steps of the EDR Process, including formal risk analysis using decision trees to help parties assess the risk-adjusted value of their cases. We will soon be offering an on-demand streaming course.
Since its founding in 2019, the Institute has trained hundreds of litigators, neutrals, judges, and in-house counsel on how to use the EDR Process.
Leadership
The Institute is led by three experienced litigators, mediators and arbitrators who are passionate about helping parties reduce the time and expense of dispute resolution.
-
“After decades of seeing parties squander needless expense and time on litigation, I developed the Protocols to help parties reach early, economical, and principled resolution, and founded the Institute to promote the process.”
-
"Through the EDR Process, I’ve helped countless parties ‘get to yes’ before traditional litigation turns up the volume on ‘no!’—saving time, money, and relationships along the way."
-
As a GC, I was always looking for ways to reduce the cost and resource drain of litigation. EDR was the solution and as an early adopter, I’ve seen the benefits firsthand.”
